Home Design Trends
With so much change in the world over the past few years, homeowners are hankering for more comfort in their homes. Our home became our sanctuary with the abrupt disruption we were faced with the world events. We crave a sense of timelessness, well-being, or even nostalgia as we transition into a new world none of us have ever experienced before. And some of us are not mad about it!
In 2021, we took on the practice of incorporating practical spaces in our homes and making ourselves more self-sufficient. Multi-purpose spaces mixing a home gym with office space, adding spaces for our children to study with dedicated homework rooms have all been very popular in custom floor plans. High-speed WiFi, lots of electrical plug-in outlets can also help these homework rooms transition to a college student living at home to have their own office space as they grow up. The home gym has become widely popular with the shutdown of public exercise gyms and has become as normal as having an extra bedroom these days. Home spaces have transformed into multifunctional spaces as homeowners have become more creative.
2022 brings more of the same and then some! Multifunctional spaces and furniture are here to stay in the next year. Innovative storage solutions to fully utilize your space and neat, organized pantry spaces as we continue to make less trips to the grocery store. Furniture that acts as both furniture and storage spaces is also becoming the norm. for example, storage ottomans can be used to tuck away unused blankets, pillows, or other items while acting as additional seating for family time. But we are seeing the design pendulum swinging back to the traditionalism as we all spend more time indoors and long for the feeling of comfort that timeless, warm elements bring to our spaces. From terracotta, deep brown hues, and warm natural stone and woods, we are transitioning from the cool grays. These warm tones are comforting and inviting, encouraging you to sit down and stay awhile.
An element of design that is making a comeback is something called biophilic design, or incorporating things like natural lighting and ventilation, natural landscape features and other elements to create a healthy environment in your home. Greenery is one of the key components of this design, and plants have certainly become important focal points in our homes. Also, designing outdoor spaces that create more living area for your home are extremely popular. This creates a continuous flow between the indoor and outdoor living areas with expansive glass doorways, natural wood patio furniture, outdoor kitchens and even multiple areas of space for both privacy and entertaining. These are perfect design elements for the Boise area with our long summer days and mild temperatures.
Another very popular trend is playing with proportions - from statement-making lighting, to sculptural vases, and even 3D artwork. Lighting is an important feature of your home and sometimes just changing out a few fixtures in living areas can make the space look different, refreshed and interesting. Don't be afraid to be adventurous in picking your lighting - you will love it!
Bold accents by decorating with large and small scale patterns is also becoming popular. You can achieve this look with wallpaper, bedding, or even window treatments. While committing to pattern can feel intimidating, there are countless ways to incorporate more pattern into your spaces. Think about patterned textiles, rugs, pillows, and artwork - it's all about scale and maintaining a consistent color palette to make your home feel consistent and interesting.
Don't be afraid to incorporate family heirlooms or antique furniture for more traditional touches to your home. People want furniture pieces that have richness and history, so mixing and matching with your current furniture is more than okay! People are putting away the perfectly curated spaces we've become so accustomed to, in favor of adding more personality. Displaying items related to hobbies, interests and travel are being dusted off and are becoming prominent in our homes.
Trends can be very difficult to stay on top of. If your home reflects how you live, colors you love and items that create a sense of well-being for you and your family, this never goes out of style.
